GREENSBORO, N.C. - Pfeiffer University earned close doubles' victories that set the tone to sweep the singles' matches as Guilford College fell to Division II Pfeiffer in a Saturday afternoon match, 9-0.
The Quakers battled with the Falcons early in the afternoon in doubles, Erik Meiler and Mesa Matrorell pushed Axel Woerner and David Weir to the limit as the Falcons' number-one doubles squad squeaked out a victory, 8-6. Mason Church and Levi Bruff also tested Pfeiffer's number three tandem of Jimmy Molina and Zach Huffman, but fell 8-6.
The Falcons earned straight-sets victories in all singles competitions, but John Brvenik tested Eduan Louw in number six singles, forcing a first-set tiebreaker that Louw claimed, 7-2, on the way to a 7-6 victory in the set. Louw rallied to claimed the second set, 6-2, to win the match. Pfeiffer's top three singles competitors earned the advantage over the Quakers by holding Guilford to just nine-game victories in all top three singles matches combined.
The Quakers (0-1) return to action next Saturday, hosting Oglethrope for a noon match.
