Guilford Downs Randolph for School-Record Eighth ODAC Win

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College's men's tennis team concluded its regular season Saturday with a 7-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory at Randolph College Saturday.

The Quakers (10-4, 8-2 ODAC) captured two-of-three doubles points and five-of-six singles matches for their third straight win and their eighth in nine matches. Guilford's eight ODAC wins broke the former school record of seven. The Quakers' 10 overall victories are their most since 2011.

Guilford's top doubles tandem of Erik Meiler and Turner Votipka claimed an 8-3 win over Randolph's Dario Schiano-Morello and Danili Lyalko. The Quakers' Trevor Cox and Aaron Smedley won at second doubles, 8-4, over the WildCats' Trevor Johnson and JT von Seggern.

Votipka downed Bradley Strober, 6-1, 6-4, at first singles for his team-leading 13th victory of the season. Meiler needed three sets to top Lyalko at third singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, as did Mesa Martorell at sixth singles. Martorell narrowly defeated Dan Phung, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 10-8.

Aaron Smedley joined Meiler and Votipka as Guilford's two-time winners by downing Johnson, 6-1, 6-3, at fourth singles. The Quakers' Mason Church won the fifth-singles tilt, 6-2, 6-3, over the Wildcats' Doug Corbett.

Von Seggern rallied to defeat Guilford's Cox at second singles, 2-6, 6-1, 10-8, for Randolph's second point.

Coach Dave McCain's Quakers now await the announcement of the ODAC Tournament pairings. The eight-team tournament begins April 25 on campus sites.
