Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kelsey Ruehling served up three straight aces to end Guilford College's narrow 3-0 volleyball victory over Salem College Saturday. The Quakers (7-18) fought off three set points in the third set for a 27-25, 25-18, 26-24 victory in their season finale.
Guilford trailed, 20-17, in the opening set before reeling off 10 of the game's next 15 points. Quakers' senior Brittany DeCesare recorded three of her six kills in the last four points to secure the win. Michaela Wall, who had a club-high eight kills in the match, put away two balls in the first game's decisive stretch.
A 9-2 Guilford run broke a 10-10 tie in set two and helped the Quakers take a 2-0 lead. Coach Emily Gann's team hit .205 in the set.
Salem did not quit and put together a 7-1 run to take a 24-21 lead. Guilford recovered thanks to a Spirits' hitting error, followed by Casey Davis' seventh and final kill of the match, and the first of Ruehling's aces to level the match at 24-24.
Guilford's Jessica Patrick had a season-high seven kills and Becca Benfield added six, plus a team-high three blocks. Maile Munro had 17 assists and six digs. Davis enjoyed a solid all-around match with seven kills, 13 assists, and 12 digs. Brooke Herr picked up a team-high 15 digs for the Quakers.
Hillary McPhatter had a match-high 11 kills and 12 digs for the Spirits (9-13). Teammate Kylie Taffer added 10 kills and Zykeya Henderson had 15 digs.
