Guilford Bests Averett, 10-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – John Macon Smith's two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the first set the tone for the remainder of Guilford College's 10-6 nonconference baseball win over visiting Averett University Thursday.

The Quakers (7-6) began the game with nine straight runs. Guilford's Dylan Clark (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings. The Cougars (15-4) tallied six runs over the fifth and sixth innings, narrowing their gap to 9-6. Jordan Slate's single in the bottom of the seventh plated Guilford's 10th run.

Kent Peterson went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI for the Quakers. Macon was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Corey Wallace hit big again, tallying a home run and a triple with a game-high three RBI.

Averett's Jordan Kidd went 2-for-5 with a double two RBI.  Jason Carter, the Cougars' top batter, was held to two hits and one RBI. Timothy Coston (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season.

The Quakers play a home doubleheader against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Shenandoah University at noon on Sunday, Mar. 10 at McBane Field. Weather pushed the game until Sunday. The twinbill was scheduled to be played in Winchester, Va., on Saturday.
