Quakers Gain First Win of 2011

DANVILLE, Va. - Guilford College's volleyball team went 1-1 Saturday in its final two matches of the Averett University Cougar Classic. The Quakers (1-3) fell to Southern Virginia University, 25-16, 25-16, 25-15, in their first match, but bounced back to knock off Peace University 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.

In Guilford's first match, senior Laura Kopald paced the Quakers with 10 kills on .207 hitting and Taylor Whitley set up 20 assists. Teammate Taylor Phillips added 12 digs.

Kopald led the way with nine kills versus Peace. She had offensive help from Emma Gunn, who had seven kills on .316 hitting, and Malikah French, who also had seven kills. Whitley had 29 assists and Phillips (11) shared team-high dig honors with Mary Moody. Gunn represented Guilford on the all-tournament team.

Guilford visits Meredith College Wednesday (9/7) at 7:00 p.m.
