GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College's men's and women's tennis teams pulled out narrow 5-4 victories over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday. Rain forced the matches into the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Quakers' men (5-2, 2-1 ODAC) bounced back after the Marlins (1-4, 1-2 ODAC) took two of the three doubles points. Guilford freshman Tyler Mercier remained unbeaten in singles play with a straight-set win over Virginia Wesleyan's Zak Bartley at first singles. Four singles matches needed a third set to break ties, and Guilford won two of those matches. Guilford's Brandon Johnson won his season debut at fifth singles with a narrow 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8 victory over Virginia Wesleyan's Jamie Griffin.
The Quakers are back in action Mar. 13 against preseason league favorites Washington and Lee University at 1:00 p.m. on Guilford's McMichael Centennial Class Courts.
