LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College's tennis teams swept both men's and women's matches at Randolph College Saturday. The Quakers' men shutout the Wildcats, 9-0, while Guilford's women overcame two forfeited matches for a 6-3 victory.
Guilford's Tyler Mercier and Clayton Hamilton ground out a tough 8-6 first-doubles win over Randolph's Sam Churchill and Teague Nelson. The match proved one of the day's closest. Mercier downed Churchill, 6-0, 6-0, in first singles and Hamilton lost just three points in a straight-set triumph over the Wildcats' Yanpaing Oo at second singles. The tightest singles match was in the fifth flight where Guilford's Brandon Johnson rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Nelson.
The win snapped a three-match losing skid and improved Guilford's overall record to 6-5 (3-2 ODAC). Randolph slipped to 3-8 (0-4 ODAC).
Guilford's men return to action Mar. 28 at league-rival Hampden-Sydney College. The Quakers' women visit Sweet Briar College Apr. 1 in an ODAC contest.
