GREENSBORO, N.C. – Visiting Christopher Newport University swept a pair of nonconference tennis matches at Guilford College Friday afternoon. The regionally ranked Captains' men's team scored an 8-1 win over Guilford and the women's team claimed a 6-3 decision.
Christopher Newport's men, ranked 10th in the Mar. 17 ITA NCAA Division III South Atlantic Ratings, improved to 4-2 with Friday's win. Eric Shulman, the region's third-ranked singles player, pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 win over Guilford's Tyler Mercier at first singles and teamed with rookie Josef Manilla for an 8-5 triumph at first doubles over Mercier and Clayton Hamilton. Manilla downed Hamilton and second singles, 7-6, 6-3.
Guilford's Ben Nelson and Jody Cox scored the Quakers' (5-5) lone point with an 8-6 victory at third doubles over Christopher Newport's Thomas Whaling and Chris Yost.
The Quakers visit Randolph College Saturday (3/19) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play while Christopher Newport visits Greensboro College Saturday for a USA South Athletic Conference match.
