FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Methodist University convincingly swept both men's and women's tennis matches from visiting Guilford College Saturday. The Monarchs' men claimed an 8-1 win, while Methodist's women captured a 9-0 decision.
After winning all three doubles matches by matching 8-2 scores, Methodist (5-2) took five of six singles contests. Guilford's (3-1) lone win came at first singles where freshman Tyler Mercier won in three sets over Methodist's Matthew Taylor, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Mercier raised his singles record this season to 4-0.
Duncan Miller downed Guilford's Clayton Hamilton, 6-1, 6-0, at second singles and teamed with Taylor to drop Mercier and Hamilton at first doubles. Like Miller, Austin Wang, Robert Clayton and Brad Tulenko all won in both singles and doubles.
The Quakers return to action Sunday in Virginia. Guilford's men visit Ferrum College and the Quakers' women visit Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Hollins University.
