Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/3/10) – Guilford College pulled out a stirring 76-74 home win over Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday night in the Quakers' debut as the top-ranked team in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

Guilford's Rhett Bonner scored on driving layup with 9.3 seconds left in regulation to break the game's 11th and final tie. After a timeout, the Quakers' Tyler Sanborn blocked a Turner King jumper in the game's waning seconds, to preserving Guilford's 15th straight win and its eighth in a row over its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival.

King led all scorers with 26 points, including 20 in the second half that helped the Tigers erase an 11-point deficit with 11:17 left in the game. His three-pointer with 7:55 remaining tied capped an 11-2 Tigers' run and tied the game at 57-57.

Guilford's T.C. Anderson made his lone basket of the game, a three-pointer with 45 seconds left that opened a 74-70 cushion. King made two free throws at the other end and the Tigers' Harrison George picked Bonner's pocket and scored a game-tying dunk with 19 seconds remaining.

Bonner took the ensuing inbounds pass, drove the length of the floor and scored the game-winner with a driving runner through traffic. He finished with 17 points, 11 in the second half.

Sanborn paced the Quakers with 22 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and four blocked shots for his league-leading 17th double-double of the year. With senior Clay Henson held to a season-low five points, rookie Josh Pittman contributed a career-high 14 points off the bench behind four-of-five three-point shooting. Guilford enjoyed a 42-29 rebounding advantage that included 18 offensive boards leading to 28 second-chance points.

King shot four-of-six from three-point range and shared team-high rebounding honors with Colin O'Neill (10 points). Ben Jessee had 12 points and four assists, but did not score in the second half. George finished with 10 points, six boards and two assists off the bench.

The Quakers return to action Saturday (2/6) at league-rival Washington and Lee University at 3:00 p.m.
