Guilford Wins Two in Virginia Wesleyan & Averett Tri-Match

Greensboro, N.C. (10/23/10) -- Guilford won both games of the conference/nonconference tri-match Saturday afternoon.

In the first game Guilford upended Virginia Wesleyan College to improve to 13-11 and 4-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Mary Moody paced the Quakers with 14 kills on .333 hitting and 22 digs. Teammate Taylor Whitley had 34 assists and Traci Teague and Emma Gunn added five and six blocks, respectively.

The Marlins took the opening set, 25-22, but Guilford rallied to win the next three, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16. Virginia Wesleyan was lead by Kala Guy with 16 kills and Marissa Wood's 30 assists.

The Quakers went 2-0 on the day with a win over Averett University, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19. Seniors, Stephanie Blankenship, Kate Dailey and Courtney Kozar, saw a great deal of action in their final home match. Kozar had 11 kills and five blocks, Dailey had seven assists, and Blankenship added two blocks in the win. Traci Teague lead the Quakers with 15 kills on .303 hitting. Rookie Taylor Whitley had 31 assists, Taylor Phillips had 25 digs and Emma Gunn came up big with five blocks. The Quakers are now 14-11 on the year.

Once again the visiting team was able to take set one, but Guilford battled back with to win the next three sets. Averett was lead by Sarah Sparks with nine kills on .333 hitting. Jesse Jones had 31 assists and Jordan Bay had 21 digs for the Cougars in the match.

The Quakers host ODAC-rival Lynchburg Wednesday (10/27) at 6:30 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
