Yellow Jackets Win Two From Guilford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va. (4/18/09) – Randolph-Macon hit a combined seven home runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of ODAC rival Guilford on Saturday afternoon in Ashland. Randolph-Macon won game one, 10-7, and the nightcap, 18-10.

The Yellow Jackets (17-17, 12-6 ODAC) found themselves down 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning after Joe John doubled to open the frame and scored on an Alex Starbuck single. Later in the inning, Drew Ward singled to plate John and the Quakers took advantage of a miscue in the field by Randolph-Macon to go up by four.

The Yellow Jackets erupted for all 10 of their runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the fourth to put the game away. The big blow of the inning came when Charlie Hartt hit a three-run homer.

James Bierlein picked up the win on the mound for Randolph-Macon, tossing five innings and allowing just two earned runs to improve his record to 3-0 on the season.

In game two, Hartt and Dann Woods both hit home runs, while Jeff Beck and Mike Wallace hit two round trippers apiece as the Yellow Jackets completed the sweep.

Hartt put Randolph-Macon up 1-0 in its initial at bat with an RBI single that scored Kevin Davis. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases later in the inning and Beck delivered a grand slam to push the Jackets' lead to 5-0.

Randolph-Macon then took advantage of four Quaker errors in the second inning to score a pair of runs to go up 7-0.

Guilford clawed back, putting up five runs on five hits in the third inning to pull within two at 7-5. John Goodwin, Kyle Wooden and Ward all had RBI hits for the Quakers in that inning.

The game stayed that way until the bottom of sixth when the Yellow Jackets put the contest away with an eight spot that featured a solo home run from Woods, a three-run homer off the bat off Wallace and a two run shot by Beck, that extended the Randolph-Macon lead to 15-5.

Dillon Sheads went 2.2 innings in relief to pick up the win for the Yellow Jackets. Sheads surrendered three hits and struck out four to run his record to 1-0 on the season. Guilford starter Corey Landis was saddled with the loss after giving up 10 runs in 5.2 innings of work.
