Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/11/09) – Virginia Wesleyan College swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Guilford College Saturday, winning 7-3 and 11-4.
The Marlins (20-10, 10-4 ODAC) broke a 3-3 tie in the opener with two runs in the top of the fifth inning off of Guilford starter Adam Hart (4-2). Mike Marion's one-out single up the middle scored C.J. Rhodes from second and Phil Cadle scored from first when the ball got by Guilford center fielder Terrance Penn. Virginia Wesleyan added two insurance runs in the sixth on Max Axelrod's RBI double and an RBI hit by Cadle.
Brett Horowitz improved to 5-0 with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He came into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after Guilford tied the game on solo home runs by Drew Ward and Will Cornelius. Horowitz scattered two hits and struck out three.
Cadle was three-for-four with a double and two RBI for the Marlins. Axelrod doubled twice and scored two runs. Guilford's Ward and John Goodwin both had two hits.
The Marlins jumped out to a 6-0 lead with four unearned runs in the second inning of the nightcap. Myles Shipp led off the game with a home run off of Guilford starter Brian Bialecki (1-3) and Marion added an RBI double later in the first inning. Penn misplayed a ball hit by Cadle with two out in the second that allowed two runs to score. Rhodes followed with his sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot, which provided all the offense Virginia Wesleyan needed.
Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of five consecutive walks and two wild pitches by three Guilford pitchers to open an 11-0 margin in the fifth inning.
Guilford (17-15-1, 6-7 ODAC) got on the board in the home sixth on a two-run homer by Kyle Wooden, his team-high eighth blast of the year. Joe John and Alex Starbuck belted back-to-back solo blasts in the seventh to provide the game's final margin.
Marion paced Virginia Wesleyan with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI. Shipp and Rhodes both homered among their two hits and finished with two RBI. Junior Nick Pisula (4-2) worked around eight hits in 6.2 innings for the win. He yielded all four Quakers' runs, walked one and struck out four.
John, Starbuck and Drew Gurkin all had two hits for Guilford. Sophomore Zach Daw threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief with a career- and game-high five strikeouts in the longest outing of his career.
Guilford entertains NCAA Division II Bluefield State Tuesday (4/14) in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Haworth Field. Virginia Wesleyan visits Eastern Mennonite University Friday (4/17) for a 2:00 league twinbill.
