Guilford Splits With Emory & Henry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EMORY, Va. (3/22/09) - Kyle Wooden had five hits, including his second homer of the day, to give Guilford College an 11-4 win and a split of Sunday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at Emory & Henry College Sunday. The host Wasps (5-11, 3-3 ODAC) claimed the opener, 8-6, which ended Guilford's (15-7-1, 4-2 ODAC) four-game winning streak.

Junior Codie Mitchell went 2-4 with four RBI in the opener for Emory & Henry. His two-run, two-out double in the third gave Emory & Henry a 3-0 lead. After Guilford tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, Mitchell sparked Emory & Henry's five-run fourth inning with a two-run single. The Wasps sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth, including Josh Sickles and Josh Nelson, who hit back-to-back doubles off of Guilford starter Reid MacLean (2-1).

Trailing 8-3, Guilford mounted a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning after starter Keith Fenner walked Drew Gurkin and hit Wooden. Rookie Joe Washburn replaced Fenner and Drew Ward greeted him with a two-run single to right. Ward took second on an error and scored on Jared Davis' pinch-single to make it an 8-6 game. Washburn retired Jay Cox on a grounder to third to end the game.

Anthony Lowry paced the Wasps with three hits and scored twice. Eight different batters recorded hits for Emory & Henry. Fenner evened his record at 2-2 with 6.2 innings of seven-hit work.

Cox and Ward both had two hits for the Quakers. Wooden belted a two-run homer to right in the fourth inning.

Wooden had three RBI and a career-high five hits in the nightcap, including his team-leading seventh homer of the year. After 23 games, Wooden is batting .575 with seven homers and 35 RBI. Ward also had three RBI in the second game and added four hits, including two doubles. His RBI single in the second scored Wooden and contributed to the Quakers' three-run inning.  Ward also had an RBI double in the three-run sixth that opened a 6-0 Guilford lead.

Emory & Henry got to Guilford starter Corey Landis (2-1) for three runs in the sixth inning. Tyler Crowder's two-run double was the frame's big blast. Sammy Stuart relieved Landis with the bases loaded and induced an inning-ending ground ball from designated hitter Lee VanLear.

Wooden and Ward hit RBI singles in Guilford's four-run seventh inning that opened a 10-4 margin. Wooden's solo homer in the eighth provided the game's final score.

Guilford visits Lynchburg College Wednesday (3/25) at 6:00 p.m. The game will be played in City Stadium.
