Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. (2/4/09) – Clay Henson scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to help visiting Guilford College over Hampden-Sydney College, 62-56, Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball action. The Quakers' (16-4, 9-2 ODAC) 12th win in 14 games gave them a sweep of the season series with Hampden-Sydney (9-12, 4-8 ODAC) for the third consecutive year.
Two Rhett Bonner free throws with 6:29 left broke the game's fifth tie and gave the Quakers the lead for good. The Tigers trailed by one point twice in the final 1:43, but Bonner and Henson combined to make all six free throws in the last 76 seconds to preserve Guilford's third straight win and a share of first place in the ODAC standings.
Hampden-Sydney overcame a 14-point second-half deficit thanks in large part to a 12-3 run midway through the period that tied the game at 47-47. The Tigers scored on six straight possessions during the spurt, which Ben Jessee's jumper capped with 10:26 left in regulation.
The Quakers' defense clamped down from that point and held the Tigers to two-for-nine field-goal shooting over the next nine minutes. Hampden-Sydney also committed all five of its second-half turnovers in that time.
With Henson and Bonner combining for 23 second-half points on the perimeter, center Tyler Sanborn provided key minutes in the paint for Guilford. The 6-9 junior grabbed 10 of his game-high 13 rebounds in the second half. He finished with 18 points and his league-leading 12th double-double of the season. Sanborn's play helped the Quakers to a 24-12 edge in interior scoring. Bonner totaled 14 points, five boards and a game-best six assists.
Turner King paced Hampden-Sydney with 16 points, 12 in the second half. Jonathan Mudd added 12 points for the Tigers. Lane Medlin had five points and a team-best eight boards.
Guilford returns hosts Washington and Lee University Saturday (2/7) in a 3:00 p.m. ODAC game. Hampden-Sydney hosts league-rival Emory & Henry University Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the second of a four-game home stand.
