Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. (1/19/09) - Tyler Sanborn scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and posted his fifth straight double-double in Guilford College's 69-51 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Hampden-Sydney College Monday night. Sanborn corralled a game-high 15 rebounds, nine in the second half, as the Quakers (13-3, 6-1 ODAC) won for the 10th time in 11 games.
The game's first 33 minutes featured tight, physical play as the teams combined for 10 lead changes and five ties. Hampden-Sydney's Shane Payne made one of two free throws to pull the Tigers (8-8,. 3-4 ODAC) within 46-45 with 10:54 remaining. Guilford answered with a decisive 9-2 run over the next 3:47, which opened a 55-47 edge. Sanborn and Martin Stephenson both scored four points during the Quakers' spurt, which featured six of Guilford's 17 second-chance points.
Karlis Trops's putback trimmed Guilford's lead to 55-49 with 6:27 left. The basket marked Hampden-Sydney's final field goal as the Quakers reeled off the next 14 points and ended the game on a 14-2 run. The Tigers managed five-of-25 (20%) field-goal shooting in the second half and shot 33.3 percent for the game.
Guilford junior Clay Henson, who earlier in the day was named the ODAC's Men's Basketball Player of the Week, scored 13 points for Guilford, despite a five-for-15 shooting night. Teammate George Neville finished with 12 points, 11 in the first half, which helped the Quakers to a 35-33 halftime lead. Neville added nine boards to help Guilford enjoy a 45-35 rebounding edge.
Hampden-Sydney's Turner King shared game-high scoring honors with 19 points, but only six in the second half. He also paced the Tigers with nine rebounds and had two steals. Rookie Ben Jessee knocked down four three-pointers and scored 14 points for the Tigers. Senior Byron Lawton scored three points and had a team-best four assists in his regular-season homecoming.
The Quakers return to action Wednesday (1/21) at Bridgewater College at 7:00 p.m. Hampden-Sydney hosts Lynchburg College Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
