Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Tyler Sanborn scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds in Guilford College's sixth straight win, a 73-53 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) triumph at Randolph College Saturday afternoon. Sanborn's play helped the Quakers (10-2, 3-0 ODAC) enjoy a 42-23 rebounding advantage in the first men's basketball meeting between the two schools.
The host Wildcats (2-11, 0-6 ODAC) jumped out to a 13-4 lead before the Quakers recovered from some early shooting woes. After falling behind by nine, Guilford outscored Randolph, 30-11, over the next 13:55. Sanborn and Clay Henson both scored six points during the run and rookie Gabriel Lowder added five points for the Quakers, who led at halftime, 38-32.
Guilford scored 15 of the first 22 points of the second half to open a 53-39 lead, but Randolph's Pete Hamilton answered with consecutive three-pointers to keep the hosts in it. The Wildcats later pared the deficit to seven points, but drew no closer the rest of the way.
Sanborn had the most rebounds in a game by a Quaker since Ben Strong '08 grabbed 19 boards against Emory & Henry College in 2007. With Guilford's guards struggling from the field, the 6-9 junior made eight-of-14 field goals and turned in his team-leading sixth double-double of the year. Henson and Rhett Bonner both finished with 12 points, thanks to a combined 11-for-13 shooting effort from the free-throw line. Lowder finished with 11 points off the bench and George Neville contributed 10 points. Guilford matched its season low with nine turnovers in the game and converted 15 offensive rebounds into 11 points. Randolph managed just one offensive rebound in the game.
Randolph's Hamilton made five-of-seven three-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points, 14 in the second half. Timothy Clarke scored 13 points and dished out four assists for the Wildcats, who shot 50 percent from the floor.
Guilford travels to Roanoke College Monday for an intriguing early-season ODAC game. The Maroons are ranked 22nd in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and took a 3-0 league record into Saturday night's home game with Eastern Mennonite University. Randolph returns to action next Saturday (1/17) at Eastern Mennonite.
