Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. (3/29/08) -- The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped an ODAC doubleheader to Guilford on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals lost the first game, 4-3, and then fell in the nightcap, 8-6.
The initial game remained scoreless through 3.5 innings until Washington and Lee junior second baseman Byron Peyster's sacrifice fly plated sophomore first baseman Hunter Serenbetz in the bottom of the fourth. Guilford evened the score in the top of the sixth off a home run from junior designated hitter Brad Buchman and then extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh, aided by a Buchman two-run double. Sophomore catcher Will Lewis smacked a double to right field, scoring two runs and tightening the score to 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally was cut short as the Quakers retired the Generals' final two batters.
Lewis had one hit in four at-bats with a double and two RBI in the opener, while sophomore shortstop John Ditore and senior right-fielder James Madden both batted 3-for-4. Peyster was 2-for-2 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Senior left-hander Jeff Pharis took the loss (1-1), after giving up two hits and three earned runs in just 1.1 innings of work.
Guilford was led in game one by Buchman's 2-for-4 outing with a double, a home run and three RBI. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Hairston tossed the entire seven-inning game for the Quakers, allowing 12 hits and three earned runs.
In the second game, Guilford jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first frame and led 6-2 entering the fourth inning. Serenbetz homered to right center in the bottom of the fourth and Madden hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4, but the Quakers immediately plated two runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-4 advantage. Washington and Lee attempted another comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Ditore tallied an RBI single and Madden notched an RBI double, slicing the lead to 8-6, but it wasn't enough as the Quakers held on for their second win of the day.
Serenbetz totaled two hits in four at-bats in game two, along with a home run and two RBI. Junior center-fielder Terrence McKelvey hit 2-for-3 and Madden was 1-for-4 from the plate with a double and two RBI. Senior right-hander Tim Livingston was saddled with the loss (3-2) after allowing five hits and four earned runs in the first three innings of the contest.
Guilford (14-14, 4-6) was led by sophomore catcher Jason Flud, who had one hit in three at-bats with two RBI. Buchman hit 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while senior first baseman Phil Drew posted a 2-for-5 performance from the plate with a double.
Guilford visits ODAC-rival Roanoke College Wednesday (4/2) for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Generals (16-8, 7-6) also return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shenandoah for a 4:00 pm contest.
