Greensboro, N.C. (2/6/08) -- Just before Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill battled for Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball supremacy an hour away, Guilford College and Washington and Lee University treated hoops fans to an exciting contest that determined first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings.

Reigning NCAA Division III Player of the Year Ben Strong scored the decisive free throw with 57 seconds left and blocked two potentially game-tying three-pointers in the final 10 seconds of Guilford's 64-60 win over the Generals Wednesday night in the Ragan-Brown Field House.

Guilford maintains first place in the league after winning a meeting of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) leaders for the third straight game. The Quakers (15-4, 10-2 ODAC), ranked 16th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, extended their winning streak to a season-best seven games and ended the Generals' (12-6, 8-3 ODAC) longest victory skein since 1989 at six.

With the scored tied at 60-60, Strong made the first of two free throws, but missed the second following a Washington and Lee time-out. He made two more free throws with 15 seconds remaining, which extended the Quakers' lead to 63-60. On the ensuing possession, Strong blocked Chris McHugh's three-point attempt out of bounds with seven seconds left and rejected Kirk Jones' trifecta with one second remaining. He rebounded Jones' miss and was fouled by McHugh. Strong made one of the two free throws with one second left, which provided the final margin.

Strong's late-game heroics helped Guilford hold off a gutsy Generals' rally that saw the guests erase a 16-point second-half deficit. Washington and Lee made six second-half three-pointers, including three of Jones' game-high five trifectas. His fifth and final three-pointer gave the Generals a 58-56 lead with 2:43 remaining. His 15 points led the visitors. McHugh had two second-half trifectas and finished with 14 points. Senior teammate Femi Kusimo added 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds despite playing much of the second half with four fouls. Washington and Lee's top scorer, senior forward Greg Bienemann, finished with eight second-half points before fouling out with 5:47 left in the game.

Strong overcame an uncharacteristically poor shooting night to record his 14th double-double of the season and the 37th of his career. He scored 12 of his 20 points in the second half and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds (6 offensive). Eric Belkoski added 12 points and eight rebounds, including two free throws with 2:07 left that gave the hosts a 60-58 edge. Clay Henson drained three three-pointers on the way to 10 points. Guilford entered the game ranked third among NCAA Division III free-throw leaders, but made just 17-of-31 shots from the line for a season-low 54.8 percent.

The Quakers seek their eighth straight win Saturday (2/9) against visiting Lynchburg College at 3:00 p.m. The Generals hit the road for a rugged weekend road trip at Randolph-Macon College and Virginia Wesleyan College.
