Guilford Drops Season Opener to Greensboro

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. (2/5/08) – Senior Anthony Corona hit a school-record three home runs in consecutive innings as visiting Greensboro College's scored a 23-3 baseball win over Guilford College Tuesday afternoon. With the winds blowing out at McBane Field, the Pride (3-0) scored in every inning and hit a school- record seven home runs off of seven Quakers' (0-1) hurlers.

Leadoff man Jacob Tomb started the hit parade in the first inning with a two-strike blast off of Guilford starter Reid MacLean (0-1). MacLean retired three of the next four batters on strikeouts before Corona lined a solo shot over the right-field fence to make it 2-0.  The next five batters also reached base, including third baseman Alex Guerra, whose two-run double opened a 5-0 Greensboro lead after one-and-a-half innings.

Junior Michael Costa, making his collegiate pitching debut, replaced MacLean in the top of the third inning. After walking leadoff hitter Tyler O'Neill, Corona smacked his second homer in as many innings for a 7-0 Pride advantage.

Corona belted a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning off of Guilford reliever Paul Keenan to account for half of the Pride's six unearned runs in the frame.  Corona batted with the bases loaded in the fifth in a bid for a home-run cycle of sorts, but the Quakers' Ryan Hairston got him to pop up to the pitcher.

Corona went three-for-five with six RBIs. His three home runs fell one shy of matching the NCAA Division III record. Tomb finished with three hits and four RBIs.  Senior second baseman Jeff Gregory had four of the Pride's 23 hits, including a double.  Senior southpaw Torrey Poholsky benefitted from the offensive outburst and picked up his first win of the year with five strikeouts in five innings of work.

Phil Drew led the Quakers with three hits, including two doubles and a triple.

Guilford returns to action Friday (2/8) at Atlanta Christian College in East Point, Ga.  Greensboro begins a four-game set in Alabama Saturday (2/9) with a 12:30 doubleheader at Birmingham Southern College.

Guilford and Greensboro conclude the season series March 25 in a 6:00 p.m. game at NewBridge Bank Park in downtown Greensboro.
