Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (12/30/08) -- Rhett Bonner scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the second half in Guilford College's 70-49 men's basketball win over visiting Emory University Tuesday night. Teammate Clay Henson netted 12 of his 15 points in the second period as the Quakers (8-2) made over 77 percent of their second-half shots in their fourth straight win.
Emory (4-6) used aggressive defense and strong rebounding to take a 20-11 first-half lead. Guilford outscored the Eagles, 18-3, over the final 6:47 of the period, thanks in part to Bonner's nine points in the half's final 3:52. The Quakers' George Neville scored seven of his 11 points in the first half, which helped the hosts to a 29-23 intermission lead.
A Neville basket 4:22 into the second half opened a 41-27 Quakers' margin, but Emory rallied and made it an eight-point game with 11:47 left on Marc Miller's follow basket. The Eagles struggled to make shots the rest of the way, while Guilford hardly missed from the field. After making only 10-of-32 first-half shots, the Quakers shot 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the floor in the second half. Emory managed just 10-of-37 (27%) field-goal shooting in the second half. Guilford's Tyler Sanborn led the Quakers' defensive effort with a career-high seven blocks, four in the second half.
In addition to his seven blocks, Sanborn added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Bonner knocked down five-of-eight three-pointers and missed matching his career scoring high by one point. Rookie Gabriel Lowder contributed seven points and a career-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Dan Curtin was Emory's high scorer with 10 points. Scott Azaroff added six four points and a team-best seven boards.
