Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (01/12/08) -- Junior guard David Carlson scored a game-high 26 points to lead visiting Randolph-Macon College to a 69-60 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Guilford College Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets' eighth straight win marked the Quakers' first home loss of the season and ended Guilford's six-game home winning streak dating to last year.
Guilford is ranked 11th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.
"They were very aggressive. They were very physical," Quakers' coach Tom Palombo said afterwards. "We couldn't really do what we wanted to do offensively. They pressured the ball very well and were physical with us through screens and really shut us down offensively."
Consecutive three-pointers by Randolph-Macon freshman Danny Jones with four minutes to play triggered a game-ending 22-7 run. Trailing 53-47 with 7:34 remaining in regulation, rookie Jordan Brown scored a three-pointer before Jones knocked down his first trifecta at the 4:39 mark, which tied the game for the ninth and final time. Following a Guilford miss, Jones drained his second three-pointer, this one from the top of the key off a Justin Short assist. The basket gave the Yellow Jackets a 56-53 edge with 3:56 left and marked the contest's 10th and final lead change. Guilford drew no closer than two points as the Yellow Jackets held the Quakers without a field goal for 7:31 during their decisive, game-ending burst.
Carlson had 17 first-half points, thanks to three of his game-high four three-pointers. For the game, he made eight-of-15 shots from the floor and all six free throws. Short added with 14 points, six boards and a game-high four assists. Jones finished with 12 points, 10 in the second half. Randolph-Macon enjoyed a 44-38 rebounding advantage and became the first team in 2007-08 to outrebound the Quakers, who started the week ranked first in NCAA Division III in rebounding margin.
"The biggest problem was we didn't rebound the ball today like we had all year long," Palombo said. "They had 17 offensive rebounds (leading to 13 points) and that's the difference in the game. They took care of the ball and rebounded it and we didn't take care of the ball and rebound it."
Reigning Division III Player of the Year Ben Strong finished with 17 points, nine boards and three blocks, all team highs. Junior reserve George Neville scored 10 points and grabbed six boards for Guilford. The Quakers scored a season-low 60 points on 39.6 percent field-goal shooting, also a season low.
