Box Score Winchester, Va. (12/17/07) -- Senior forward Jeremiah Lawrence scored a team-high 18 points in host Shenandoah University's 64-62 men's basketball upset of Guilford College Monday night in Shingleton Gymnasium.
The Quakers (4-2), ranked sixth in the current D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, fell for the first time in three games. Shenandoah (9-2) won for the eighth time in nine games and evened the all-time series at one win apiece.
Guilford trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half before mounting a second-half comeback. The Quakers took a 58-57 lead (their first since the opening minutes) on Ben Strong's three-point play with 1:57 left. The Hornets' Lenzie Adams answered at the other end with his team's 12th three-pointer of the game, this one with 1:33 remaining, to give the hosts a 62-60 edge. Kenny Cooke gave Shenandoah doubled the hosts' edge with two free throws with 1:12 left.
Guilford sophomore Tyler Sanborn scored at the other end six seconds later to make it a two-point game and rebounded senior Onyie Onunaku's miss at the other end. The Quakers called timeout with 14 seconds left, but missed their final two shots.
Shenandoah outscored Guilford, 36-0, from three-point land thanks to 12-of-27 shooting from behind the arc. The Quakers missed all 10 three-point shots.
Strong had 22 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs, for his fifth double-double of the year. Sanborn made seven-of-nine field goals to finish with a career-high 17 points and 11 boards. Senior point guard Caleb Kimbrough (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) added seven points and four assists.
Shenandoah junior Stevie Johns joined Lawrence in double-figure scoring with 13 points, all in the first half. Freshman forward Kevin Kline paced the Hornets with eight boards.
Guilford returns to action Jan. 2 against Averett University at 7:00 p.m. in the Quakers' Ragan-Brown Field House. Shenandoah hosts Randolph College Jan. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
