Box Score Lynchburg, Va. (12/1/07) - Senior center Ben Strong and sophomore guard Clay Henson scored 22 points apiece in visiting Guilford College's 101-55 basketball victory over Lynchburg College in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener Saturday afternoon. The Quakers (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) are ranked third in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.
The Quakers raced to a 15-3 lead and made 20-of-31 (64.5%) first-half field goals to take a 51-29 halftime edge. Henson knocked down four of his career-high six three-pointers in the first half and had 14 points at the break. Strong made six-of-seven field goals for 12 points and had all five of his assists in the opening frame. Sophomore center Mason Wooldridge scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in the first half for Lynchburg.
Hornets' sophomore guard K.C. Mendez netted the second half's first basket, but Lynchburg (0-4, 0-1 ODAC) never drew closer than 18 points. Guilford made 53.3 percent of its second-half shots and limited Lynchburg to 26.7 percent field-goal shooting.
Henson (pictured) was one of four Guilford students to set career scoring highs Saturday. He made eight-of-14 shots from the floor, including six-of-10 from three-point land. The Quakers converted 10-of-18 (55.6%) three-pointers after making seven-of-28 long-distance shots in their first two games. Junior forward George Neville scored 12 points off the bench, thanks in part to his five offensive rebounds. Sophomore center Tyler Sanborn added six points, a game-high 10 boards and two blocks. Senior point guard Caleb Kimbrough dished out a game- and career-best eight assists.
The Quakers return to action Wednesday (12/5) against visiting Methodist University at 7:00 p.m. in a nonconference game. The Hornets host crosstown-rival Randolph College Saturday (12/8) at 3:00 p.m.
