Box Score Lynchburg, VA (4/29/06) -- Jayson Hanky threw a complete-game six-hitter to lift second-seeded Hampden-Sydney past Guilford, 2-0, in an elimination game in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament Saturday. The Tigers (23-15) move on to play top-seeded Bridgewater Saturday night for the right to play Virginia Wesleyan Sunday for the league title.
Hanky and Guilford starter Mike Balash were tangled in a pitcher's duel for the first six innings before the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Chris Padgett hit a one-out double, took third on Todd Harrell's ground out and scored on John Apperson's single through the left side of the infield.
The Quakers (24-18) nearly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Ben Bizier was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base on Ricky Seabolt's two-out single to right field. Apperson's throw to the plate preserved the Tigers' lead.
Hampden-Sydney added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on Josh Michael's two-out RBI double that scored Apperson, who reached on a fielder's choice. Hanky retired the side in the bottom of the ninth.
Five Tigers had two hits in the team's 16-hit performance. Michael was 2-5 with an RBI. Padgett, John Schoenholtz, Tommy Burk and David Toney also had two hits for Hampden-Sydney, which defeated Guilford in Thursday's opening game, 10-1.
Rob Bittner went 1-3 in his final college baseball game. The senior first baseman set Guilford records for home runs (13) and RBIs (54) in a season.
