Box Score Greensboro, NC (4/18/06) -- Senior Rob Bittner and sophomore Scottie Wilcox were named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday night. Guilford baseball student-athletes have not won both prizes in the same week since March 2004, when Bittner and Logan Collier were recognized.
Bittner also won Guilford's Student-Athlete of the Week Award. The weekly prize is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and includes competition from April 10-16.
Bittner, a 6-5, 235-pound first baseman, hit .500, homered five times and drove in 17 runners in the Quakers' 4-1 week. He went 3-5 with two homers and five runs batted in (RBI) in Guilford's 13-4 win over Roanoke April 11. After batting 1-7 in a doubleheader at Bluefield State, Bittner erupted for seven hits in 10 at bats, including three homers and a double, in Guilford's sweep of Eastern Mennonite Saturday. He was 3-4 with four runs scored and a career-high six RBIs in the first game. In game two, he belted a school record-tying three homers and finished 4-6 with five RBIs.
Bittner leads the ODAC in home runs (12), RBIs (47) and total bases (100), ranks third in slugging (.746) and is tied for sixth in hits (50) and doubles (12). He ranks 45th in Division III in home runs per game (0.24) through games of April 9. Bittner stands second among Guilford's regulars in on-base percentage (.455) and third in batting average (.373) and runs scored (33). He needs two homers and five RBIs to break Guilford's single-season school records in both categories.
Wilcox, a 6-2, 170-pound right-handed middle reliever, earned a save in Guilford's win over Roanoke by scattering two hits over the game's last four innings. He entered the game with Guilford holding a 5-4 lead before the Quakers broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh. Wilcox picked up his second win of the season by entering Guilford's game-two victory over Eastern Mennonite in the third inning and hurling three frames in which he yielded a hit and an unearned run.
Wilcox leads the Quakers' regular pitching staff with an opponents' batting average of .209 and ranks second in earned run average (2.53) and third in appearances (12). Wilcox has a 2-0 record and 16 strikeouts in 21.1 innings this season.
Coach Nick Black's Quakers (22-14, 9-7 ODAC) take on Ferrum tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Hooker Field in Martinsville, VA. Ferrum won the first meeting between the two teams Feb. 19, 7-6, in 11 innings.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
