Box Score 2 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (4/1/06) -- Guilford Collegecame back from a 10-2 first inning deficit to defeat Hampden-Sydney College, 14-13, in game two of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader, spoiling a sweep by the Tigers who won game one, 5-4, in their last at bat. Hampden-Sydney's record moved to 13-12 overall and 6-4 in the ODAC, while the Quakers move to 17-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
John Schoenholtz got the win on the mound and at the plate for the Tigers in game one. The senior All-American tossed a complete game (seven innings) and allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out three and walking one to pick up his fifth win of the year. Meanwhile, he delivered the game-winning hit as his bases loaded single scored Todd Harrell to give the Tigers the 5-4 victory.
Hampden-Sydney trailed 4-2 after three innings as Chad Boone, Joe John and Phillip Drew combined for six hits and three RBI for the Quakers. The Tigers rallied to tie the game in the fifth when John Apperson tripled to drive in a run, then scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch. Apperson's run chased Guilford starter Dave Whigham, who worked four and one third innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four. Matt Spoerlein relieved Whigham and eventually took the loss after walking Todd Harrell in the seventh inning.
In game two, the Quakers jumped out on Tiger starter Larry Greene, sending eight batters to the plate en route to chalking up two runs on one hit. The tide shifted in the bottom of the inning however, as Hampden-Sydney sent 15 batters to the plate en route to scoring ten runs on just four hits. Quaker starter Logan Collier lasted just two thirds of the inning as he walked four batters, hit one and was responsible for the first eight runs to cross the plate.
The Tigers ran their lead to ten runs, 12-2, as they tacked on two more in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run double by Chris Padgett. The Quakers rallied for three runs in the fourth inning as Ian Spector delivered an RBI single before Boone smacked a two-run homer to make the score, 12-5, in favor of the Tigers.
Hampden-Sydney added its final run of the game in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Luke Brankley. The Quaker rally resumed in the seventh as Mike Chelenza and Ricky Seabolt each belted two-run blasts off Tiger freshman pitcher Hall Toledano, cutting the H-SC advantage to four, 13-9. In the top of the ninth, the Quakers cut the lead to two, 13-11, on a two-run single by Boone. Then after a pair of Tiger errors, Joe John delivered the knockout blow with a three-run homer to put the Quakers back in control, 14-13.
Scottie Wilcox earned the win for the Quakers after working four and one-third innings of relief and allowing just one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one. Tiger senior Jayson Hanky took the loss after giving up five runs (none earned) on four hits over one and one-third innings of work
