LYNCHBURG BASEBALL PULLS OUT 3-2 THRILLER OVER GUILFORD COLLEGE SUNDAY

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA (3/5/06) -- Sophomore first baseman Jon Crews ended the game in dramatic fashion, driving a 2-2 fast ball off the right field wall, scoring two runs and giving the Hornet baseball team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Guilford College Sunday from Fox Field.

Guilford jumped out on top early, scoring two runs in the second inning on a pair of RBI singles. That was all they would get off Hornet starter Eric Fitzsimmons, who tossed a complete game, scattering just five hits.

Lynchburg chipped away in the fourth inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Crews, who drove in all three Hornets runs on the day. In the ninth, Guilford starter Logan Collier walked lead-off man Eric O'Brien and Josh Walker beat out a sacrifice bunt, with both runners advancing on an overthrow. After an intentional walk, Crews ended the game, scoring O'Brien and Walker with the tying and winning runs, respectively.

Steven Scott was the only player with multiple-hits for either team, going 2-3, and Walker finished 1-4 with two runs scored.

Collier went the entire way for Guilford (8-3/1-1 ODAC), allowing just two earned runs on five hits, striking out six.

Lynchburg (5-3/1-1 ODAC) continues its eight-game home stand on Tuesday when Methodist College comes to Fox Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
