Box Score Hampden-Sydney, Va. (12/6/06) - Guilford College's men's basketball team won at Hampden-Sydney College for the first time in 13 games and improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1967 with a 66-63 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory Wednesday night in Fleet Gymnasium.
Guilford (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) is off to its best start since the 1967-68 club opened with 13 straight wins.
The Tigers (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) nearly forced overtime, but officials ruled a Mike Edwards' three-pointer from 22 feet out was released just after final buzzer, giving the Quakers their first win in Hampden-Sydney since a 69-64 triumph Jan. 7, 1993.
Guilford junior Caleb Kimbrough scored 12 of his season-high 14 points in the second half, including two free throws with six seconds that preserved the victory. Senior guard Jordan Snipes (above) scored nine of his game-high 17 points in the second half for Guilford.
The Quakers enjoyed a 51-44 lead with 9:33 remaining before the Tigers answered with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes. Edwards drained two three-pointers and junior forward's Troy Kaase's layup gave the hosts a 54-51 lead with 6:33 left.
Juinor center Ben Strong, the reigning ODAC Player of the Week, brought the Quakers back with two baskets sandwiched around two missed free throws by Kaase. Strong's jumper with 5:22 remaining changed the lead for the sixth and final time and gave Guilford a 55-54 edge.
Strong finished with 16 points and matched his career high with a team-best 12 boards for his four straight double-double. Sophomore forward George Neville added four points and eight boards off the bench to help Guilford win the battle of the boards, 53-39.
Rookie guard Turner King led the Tigers with 15 points off the bench. Senior guard Matt Green and junior forward Tyler Murray contributed 12 points apiece. Kaase finished with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Guilford hosts Roanoke Saturday (12/9) afternoon in an 4:00 p.m. ODAC game. The Tigers return to action at home Saturday (12/9) against defending NCAA Division III national champion Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC game.
