Belkoski's Bucket Lifts Guilford Past Greensboro, 78-74

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. (11-29-06) - Eric Belkoski's 14-foot jumper with eight seconds left in overtime broke a 74-74 tie and lifted Guilford past Greensboro, 78-74, Wednesday night in a nonconference basketball game in the Greensboro Coliseum. The win helped Guilford improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1996-97.

The cross-town rivals both entered the game with perfect records and played an entertaining contest that featured seven ties and five lead changes.  Junior Lynn Bright's three-pointer with 23 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 67 and forced the extra period. Bright's two free throws 18 seconds into overtime gave the Pride (3-1) a 69-67 lead, their first since the 13:23 mark of the first half.  Greensboro erased a 13-point second half deficit behind Bright's 13 second-half points and 10 points from Theo Tamini and Adam Nicholson.

The lead changed three times in overtime and Pride rookie point guard R.J. Smith tied the game for the seventh and final time after a steal and layup with 37 seconds remaining in the game.  Following a Greensboro timeout, Guilford worked the clock and passed the ball around to Belkoski, who was open and knocked down the game-winner with eight seconds left.

Greensboro called timeout with just under four seconds left, but coming out of the timeout, Nicholson took in inbounds pass with a foot out of bounds, which turned the ball back over to Guilford. The Pride fouled Guilford's Jordan Snipes, whose two free throws with two seconds left iced the game.

Snipes led all scorers with a season-high 30 points, four shy of his career high and his third career 30-point game.  He scored 13 points in the second half. Junior center Ben Strong notched his second straight double-double with 23 points and 11 boards. He had 13 points in the first half and added three blocks and three steals in 39 minutes.  Belkoski finished with seven points.

Bright's 18 points led four Pride students in double-figure scoring.  Junor Bruce Zamuel scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half and led Greensboro with nine rebounds. Nicholson finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.  Tamini finished with 10 points off the bench as the Pride reserves outscored their Guilford conterparts, 23-14.

Guilford opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Saturday against Lynchburg at 3:00 p.m. in the Quakers' home opener. Greensboro returns to action Saturday against Eastern Mennonite at 8:00 p.m.
