Guilford Falls to Ferrum, 84-73

Fayetteville, N.C.(11/25/06) - Ali Davenport scored 21 of her game-high 33 points in the second half to power Ferrum past Guilford, 84-73, in the first round of the Methodist/Cross Creek InnKeeper Turkey Shootout Saturday evening at Methodist College.

Davenport, a junior center, scored nine points during a decisive 11-0 Ferrum (3-1) run late in the second half. Guilford's Jasmine Wood tied the game for the fifth and final at 61-61 with 5:34 to play with two free throws. Davenport took over down the stretch, scoring 17 of the Panthers' final 23 points. She added eight rebounds on the night and made 14-of-16 shots from the floor, which aided Ferrum's 53.8% field-goal shooting percentage.

Alexa Williams led three Guilford (1-3) freshmen in double-figure scoring with 18 points. Wood finished with 16 points, 13 in the second half. Ann Seufer scored 12 points for Guilford. The Quakers have dropped three straight games.

Senior Aline Alzime scored 13 points and added six rebounds for Ferrum. Shanita Bennett led all rebounders with 10 boards for the Panthers, who enjoyed a 48-33 rebounding advantage. Quanita Bennett added 10 points.

Guilford concludes play in the tournament Sunday afternoon against host Methodist College at 4:00 p.m. Ferrum plays Piedmont College Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
