Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (10/3/06) -- Laura Gilbert put away a game-high 12 kills on .409 hitting to lead visiting Methodist to a 30-18, 30-17, 30-23 volleyball win at Guilford Tuesday night. The Monarchs rallied from a 14-5 third-set deficit to pull out the nonleague win and improve to 7-9. Guilford falls to 2-15 with its fifth straight setback.
Gilbert sparked the Monarchs in the opening game with four kills, a block and two service aces. Allison Averitt chipped in all four of her kills in the opening game. The Monarchs cruised to a 30-17 second-set win, thanks to the passing of rookie setter Tiffany Zellhart, who set up nine of her team-high 19 assist in the second game. She also served up a pair of aces in the game.
Guilford came out strong in the third game and opened the aforementioned nine-point lead, but the Monarchs slowly worked themselves back into the match and tied the contest at 17-17 on Kacie Larkin's service ace. The lead changed hands a couple time before Methodist's Jordan Grady served up nine straight points to open an insurmountable 28-21 edge. Sara Yeatman had three kills in the Monarchs' game-ending 10-2 run.
Yeatman finished with five kills and a game-high 12 digs. Emily Beck added five kills on .714 hitting and Grady finished with 10 digs. Taylor Powers added five kills to the Monarchs' balanced effort.
Kaci Loeffler paced the Quakers with a season-high 11 kills and nine digs. Becca Jones had 21 assists and a game-high 12 digs. Bethany Hawks added 10 pickups and served up two aces.
The Quakers host Greensboro Wednesday (10/4) in the Ragan-Brown Field House at 7:00 p.m. Methodist heads to Staunton, Va., for the Mary Baldwin Invitational Friday and Saturday.
