Guilford Fall to Hampden-Sydney

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC (1/25/06) -- Drew Prehmus scored all 10 of his points in a four-minute span of the second half to help visiting Hampden-Sydney hold off Guilford, 77-73, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball game Wednesday night. The Tigers move to 13-4 (7-4 ODAC) with the victory, which ends Guilford's (9-9, 7-4 ODAC) five-game winning streak.

With the Tigers holding a 45-39 lead midway through the second half, Prehmus drained the first of his two three-pointers, starting a 16-7 Hampden-Sydney run. Prehmus made all three field-goal attempts and two free throws in the spurt, which gave the guests their largest lead of the game, 61-46, with 7:50 to go.

The Quakers battled back to within three points after two L.T. Lockett free throws with 3:40 left, but Matt Green answered at the other end with his third and final three-pointer of the night. Guilford could not get defensive stops at the right time as Hampden-Sydney made 16-of-28 (57.1%) second-half field goals.

Troy Kaase, the ODAC's leading scorer, paced five Tigers in double-figure scoring with 21 points. Mike Edwards drained three trifectas on the way to 16 points. Green tallied 14 points and six assists. His seven boards shared team-high honors with Tyler Murray, who scored 10 points. Guilford won the rebounding battle, but Hampden-Sydney made just under 51% of its field goals on the night, compared to the Quakers' 37.9% shooting effort.

Ben Strong tried to keep Guilford in the game by scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. He notched his second college double-double thanks to a game- and career-high 12 rebounds. Jordan Snipes tossed in 22 points, including 12 in the second period. Lockett finished with 10 points off the bench.

The contest marked Guilford's third V Foundation night in as many seasons. Proceeds from the game's ticket sales will be donated to the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. Guilford has given over $1,000 to the foundation in the last two years.

Guilford hosts nationally ranked ODAC-rival Virginia Wesleyan Saturday (1/28) at 2:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House. Hampden-Sydney continues its three-game road swing Saturday night at Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 p.m.
