TAYLOR SHINES IN GUILFORD'S MEN'S HOOPS WIN OVER EASTERN MENNONITE

Box Score

Junior Jamel Taylor had a career day with 15 points and 13 rebounds in Guilford's 101-91 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Eastern Mennonite Sunday afternoon. The Quakers' (13-9, 8-7 ODAC) third straight victory completed a sweep of the season series with the Royals (11-10, 7-8 ODAC) and moved Guilford into sole possession of fifth place in the league standings.

Guilford received an exceptional performance from Taylor and the rest of its bench, which outscored its Eastern Mennonite counterparts, 65-29. Five players scored in double figures for the Quakers, including four reserves. Rookie Ray Edmond led the club in scoring for the second straight game with 18 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the floor. Classmate Caleb Kimbrough contributed a career-best 14 points and was the lone Guilford starter in double-digit scoring. Taylor, usually the Quakers' third-string post player, saw extended playing time due to foul trouble and an injury to rookie center Ben Strong. He responded with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the second half.

Guilford led 49-47 at halftime and never trailed in the second half. After the Quakers grabbed a 60-52 edge, Eastern Mennonite rallied to within three points on a Jason Sager three-pointer with 12:24 to play. Guilford answered with a 12-5 spurt and took a 10-point lead that grew to as many as 15 late in the game.

Sager and teammate Brad Parkes shared game-high scoring honors for the Royals with 19 points apiece. Sager had 13 rebounds for Eastern Mennonite, which enjoyed a 49-36 on the glass. Jason Lentz had a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Korey Whiting totalled 13 points, five rebounds and three steals off the bench.

Guilford shot a season-best 11-of-17 (64.7%) from three-point range. Freshman Kerry Atkinson scored 17 points and Genaro Lawhorn chipped in 11 points, four boards and four assists for the Quakers.

Guilford closes a three-game home stand Wednesday (2/9) against league-rival Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 p.m. Gate receipts from the game will be donated to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. Eastern Mennonite tries to end a three-game losing streak when it visits league-leading Randolph-Macon Wednesday (2/9) at 7:00 p.m.
