Scales Leads Bridgewater into ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament Semifinals

Salem, VA -- Rookie Shannon Scales scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to lift second-seeded Bridgewater to a 66-57 win over number-seven Guilford in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Basketball Tournament Thursday night in the Salem Civic Center.

The win sends the Eagles (21-5) into the ODAC semifinals for the ninth straight season. Bridgewater plays the winner of Thursday's final quarterfinal tilt between third-seeded Roanoke and number-six Virginia Wesleyan. The Quakers end their season at 11-15 after starting the year 2-9.

Bridgewater made eight of its first 15 second-half shots and led by 17 points after Natalie Swick's basket with 10:16 left in the game. The Quakers rallied behind rookie Lizzie Wilson, who scored all 10 of her points during a 16-5 spurt. Courtney Hill's lay-up with 4:58 left capped the run and pulled the Quakers to within 50-44.

The Eagles kept Guilford from getting closer with key baskets down the stretch from Scales, Krystal Hermes and Katy Herr. Herr's off-balanced jumper with 61 seconds left just beat the shot clock and boosted Bridgewater's lead to 61-53. The Eagles made five-of-six free throws in the final 36 seconds to ice the win.

An entertaining second half made up for a sluggish opening period. A late flurry helped the Eagles take a 23-12 halftime lead. A Scales three-pointer followed by a lay-up doubled the Eagles' lead from five to 10 points. Both teams struggled to find their shots as Quakers made only five of 31 field-goal attempts (16.1%), including two-of-15 three-pointers. The Eagles shot eight-for-28 (28.6%), four-for-12 beyond the arc.

Scales made eight-of-14 shots from the floor, including four-of-six three-pointers, and led the Eagles with seven rebounds and three steals. Jessica Young and Lindsay Andrews chipped in 11 points apiece. The Eagles shot better than 55 percent from the floor in the second half and enjoyed a 42-34 rebounding advantage for the game.

Rookie Brittiany Green led the Quakers with 18 points and added nine rebounds. Hill concluded her career with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The three-time All-ODAC pick ranks ninth in school history with 1,071 career points. Her 635 career boards stand seventh on Guilford's all-time list.

Jennifer King finished with 14 points for the Quakers. She became the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 career points with a three-pointer early in the second half. King starts her senior season with 1,007 points after three years.
