Box Score 2 Hampden-Sydney, VA - Hampden-Sydney's baseball team swept Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Guilford College Saturday, winning the first game of a doubleheader, 9-1, before taking the second, 14-6. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 11-13-1 overall and 6-4 in the ODAC as the Quakers drop to 14-13 and 3-6 in conference.
In the first game, Hampden-Sydney starting pitcher Nat Palmer (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) improved his season record to 3-1 after allowing just one run on seven hits through six innings, while sophomore Michael Hall (Leonardtown, MD/St. Mary's- Ryken) worked a perfect seventh to close out the Quakers.
The Tigers mashed out 14 hits as junior second baseman Mike Clark (Kinsdale, VA/Washington and Lee) paced the team with a 3-for-4 performance to go with two runs batted in, while senior designated hitter Josh Walton (Salem, VA/Salem) smacked his fourth homer of the season to go with four RBI as he improved his season RBI total to a team-leading 35.
Guilford first baseman Rob Bittner finished the first game 3-for-3 at the plate, while shortstop Jake Lubel scored the Quakers lone run of the contest in the sixth inning. Guilford starter Oliver Beale took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits through four innings of work.
In the second game, Hampden-Sydney's John Schoenholtz (Dharan, Saudi Arbia/McCallie School) pitched his first career complete-game as he worked all nine innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits, while walking none and striking out five, en route to running his season mark to 3-2.
The Tigers recorded a season-high 20 hits to go with a season-best 14 runs in the contest as sophomore's Jay Lilley (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) and Chris Padgett (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown), batting one-two in the Tiger order, each had four hits and two RBI. Freshman rightfielder Andy Watts (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) mashed his second homer of the season, a three-run blast, as part of a five-run seventh inning as he finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBI.
Guilford's Josh Miller, Chad Boone and Jonathan Renegar each had two hits in the second contest, while Rob Bittner drove in three runs. Guilford starter Dave Shaffer lasted five innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on ten hits, while reliever Eric Flournoy took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
Hampden-Sydney, which has won six of its last eight contests overall and three in a row against ODAC competition, returns to action Wednesday, April 7, as the team takes on Lynchburg College at 3 pm in Lynchburg, VA. Guilford plays Lynchburg Monday at 4:00 p.m.
