Box Score 2 Bridgewater, VA - Bridgewater College swept an ODAC baseball doubleheader Saturday from Guilford, winning the first game 12-5 and the second game 9-4.
In the opener, Guilford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. A.J. McCauley led off with a single and Jeff Roberts followed with a bunt single. A throwing error on the play allowed McCauley to move to third. McCauley scored on a passed ball before Josh Miller reached on an infield single. On Miller's single, a throwing error allowed to Roberts to take third and Miller advanced to second. Chad Boone's groundout then scored Roberts for a 2-0 Guilford lead. After Rob Bittner walked, Mike Chelenza belted a two-run double to right-center, giving the Quakers a 4-0 lead.
Bridgewater scored once in the bottom of the first and then scored three times in the second to tie the score. Todd Lewis doubled to open the second and Stuart Holman walked. Chance Dobbs then lined a double to right, scoring Lewis and putting runners at second and third with no outs. Kyle Walling singled home one run before Tracy Wagner's sacrifice fly tied the score at 4-4.
Stuart Holman's single in the third gave Bridgewater a 5-4 lead, but the Quakers tied the score in the top of the fourth. Chelenza ripped his second double of the game and moved to third on a wild pitch. Chelenza scored on Jake Lubel's sacrifice fly, tying the score at 5-5.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning when J.R. Estes singled with two outs, stole second and scored on a Guilford throwing error to put the Eagles up 6-5..
Bridgewater freshman reliever Ricky Read worked out of a big jam in the fifth to keep the score tied. Read entered the game in relief of starter Kyle Graumann with one out and runners at second and third. He retired Bittner on a pop foul to the catcher and Chelenza hit a pop foul to third as the Eagles escaped with the score still tied.
The Eagles scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead and then put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Estes belted an RBI-double, Holman singled in a run and Matt Johnson added a bases-clearing triple to right to give the Eagles a 12-5 lead.
Graumann pitched 4.1 innings to get the win. He allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits to improve to 3-2 on the year. Read picked up his third save of the season with 2.2 innings of hitless relief.
In the second game, starter Dan Proctor gave the Eagles eight solid innings as they completed the sweep.
The Eagles struck first in the second game when Estes ripped a two-out single in the third to plate a pair of runners.
The lead didn't last long as Bittner belted a three-run homer, giving the Quakers a 3-2 lead.
After Lewis tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, the Quakers regained the lead with one run in the sixth. Miller reached on an error to open the inning, but was forced at second on a bunt attempt by Miller. Boone then singled and Chelenza was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jeff Arzonico then drew a walk to force in a run. Proctor then worked out of the jam without any further damage as the Quakers left the bases full.
The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. A single by Kyle Walling tied the score and after Jono Brooks singled Walling to third, the Quakers went to the bullpen. Adam Comstock relieved starter Dave Shaffer and pinch-hitter Shaun Brinkley lofted a fly ball to right to score Walling, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
The Eagles loaded the bases against Comstock with no outs in the seventh, forcing the Quakers to go to the pen for Michael Idol. Estes scored from third on a wild pitch by Idol and pinch-hitter Kurt Walling followed with a two-run single for an 8-4 BC lead. Kyle Walling then ripped a double to the left-centerfield gap, scoring his brother all the way from first, giving BC a 9-4 lead.
Proctor ran his record to 5-1. He allowed just six hits and three earned runs in eight innings. He struck out six and walked two.
The Eagles improved to 13-11 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC while Guilford dropped to 13-11, 3-4.
