Greensboro, NC (02/14/04) -- Senior A.J. Robertson (Eden, NC/Morehead) made six of Guilford's school-record 13 three-pointers and finished with a season-high 24 points in the Quakers' 71-51 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win over Bridgewater Saturday.
The Quakers' seventh victory in nine games ended the Eagles' (18-5, 16-3 ODAC) nine-game winning streak and salvaged a split of the season series. Bridgewater, ranked fifth in this week's NCAA Division III South Region poll, entered the game atop the ODAC standings after Guilford (14-8, 12-6 ODAC) upended the previous leader, Eastern Mennonite, Friday night.
Guilford trailed 24-15 with 6:48 left in the first half, but ended the period with 22 unanswered points. The 22-0 run featured five three-pointers, three by Robertson. Senior Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) added eight points to the spurt, which gave the hosts a 37-24 halftime lead.
The Eagles struggled against Guilford's zone defense, connecting on 32.7 percent of its shots. Bridgewater made only five of 25 three-pointers, including one of eight in the second half. Freshman Shannon Scales (Chesterfield, VA/Commonwealth Christian) knocked down her third three-pointer of the game with 11:09 remaining to get the Eagles to within 48-41, but they drew no closer. The Quakers put the game away with a 15-3 run over the next six minutes. Robertson and Nicole McCrory (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg) each had a three-pointer and five points in the run.
Guilford's leading scorer, Jennie Keichline (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill), did not score in 15 minutes as she was hampered by foul trouble. In her absence, Hardenbergh posted her first double-double of the year with a season-high 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. She made a personal-best three three-pointers in four attempts. McCrory, who had two trifectas, finished with 10 points and a game-best four assists.
Rookie Jessica Young (Fisherville, VA/Wilson Memorial) led the Eagles with 15 points on six-of-eight shooting and five rebounds. Scales finished with 11 points off the bench and Katy Herr (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) added 10 points, four assists and three steals.
Guilford closes its home schedule Tuesday night (2/17) against Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm. Bridgewater hosts Washington and Lee Wednesday (2/18) at 7:00 pm.
