Greensboro, NC (01/24/04) - Guilford's women's basketball team forced 27 turnovers and held Hollins to 24.4 percent shooting from the floor in its 66-28 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win Saturday afternoon. The 28 points mark the Quakers' sixth-lowest total allowed in school history and the fewest points yielded since the Quakers' 57-27 triumph over Hollins February 14, 2002.
The victory added to Guilford's (9-6, 7-4 ODAC) school-record 29-game home winning streak and completed a sweep of the season series with Hollins (2-12, 1-10 ODAC). Hollins, which ended an 11-game losing skid at Washington and Lee Friday night, lost for the 12th time in 13 outings.
Neither team shot the ball well early and Hollins grabbed a 13-8 lead eight minutes into the game. The Quakers' offense slowly came to life and the defense yielded only a three-pointer to Hollins' Amanda Kite (Salem, VA/Glenvar) during a 20-3 run that helped the hosts to a 34-18 halftime advantage.
The second half proved more of the same as Hollins missed eight of its first nine shots, which helped Guilford open a 28-point lead with 12:12 remaining. Guilford sophomore Jennifer King (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) worked her way out of a first-half shooting slump and connected on five-of-six field goals in the second half. She tallied 11 of her 14 points in the final period.
Guilford's senior Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) scored a game-high 15 points and added eight rebounds. Classmate Jennie Keichline (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench and junior Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) corralled a game-best nine rebounds. Guilford scored 38 points off of 27 Hollins turnovers and enjoyed a 30-1 advantage in bench scoring.
Hollins' Coby Wilmer (Buena Vista, VA/Parry McCluer) led her team with 10 points and five rebounds. Kite finished with nine points and three boards.
Guilford visits league-rival Randolph-Macon Woman's College Tuesday (1/27) at 7:00 pm. Hollins hosts Mary Baldwin Tuesday (1/27) at 7:00 pm in a nonconference game.
