Box Score Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) scored 13 points and Ryan Stein (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) added 12 as Randolph-Macon withstood a late Guilford rally to defeat the host Quakers, 69-63, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball game Saturday.
Randolph-Macon (11-0, 5-0 ODAC) is ranked fifth in this week's D3hoops.com Division III national poll. The victory marks the Yellow Jackets' 11th straight win over Guilford (6-6, 2-3 ODAC) and ended the Quakers' four-game winning streak.
Guilford whittled a 14-point second-half deficit down to two points twice in the last minute, including with 17 seconds left on a Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford) free throw. The teams traded turnovers before the Quakers regained possession trailing 65-63 with 11 seconds remaining. Following a Guilford timeout, junior Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) missed driving layup, which the Yellow Jackets' Justin Moyer (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) recovered with four seconds left. Forced to foul, the Quakers' Devon Clyburn (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) sent Moyer to the line and Martin incurred a technical foul after the whistle. Moyer sealed Randolph-Macon's win with four free throws and extended his consecutive free-throw streak to 33, dating to the 2002-03 season.
Two Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) free throws gave Guilford its biggest lead, a 42-39 edge with 17:12 left in the game. Randolph-Macon responded with a decisive 13-1 run over the next 7:35 during which time the Quakers missed seven shots from the floor. Wansley and Stein scored four points apiece during the spurt, which freshman Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) capped with a three-pointer at the 9:37 mark.
A Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine School) trifecta with 7:20 remaining gave Randolph-Macon its largest lead of the game, 61-47. Guilford answered with back-to-back three-pointers by Clyburn to stay in the game. A putback by Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy) finished a late 9-1 Guilford run that gave the hosts hope for an upset. Randolph-Macon kept the Quakers' dream alive by missing four straight free throws in the last 65 seconds.
Randolph-Macon held a 37-35 halftime lead after the teams battled through three of the game's five changes. Junior Brandon Scott (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) gave the Yellow Jackets a boost with eight of his 11 points off the bench in the opening period. He made all three field goals, including a pair of three-pointers. Stein also had eight points at the break.
Guilford's Swindell led all scorers with 17 points. Clyburn finished with 11 points and Lawhorn chipped in 10 points off the bench. Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh), Guilford's leading scorer, tallied just two points on one-of-10 shooting from the floor, but had 10 rebounds and five assists, both game highs.
Randolph-Macon's Kurt Bergmann (Fallsington, PA/Pennsbury) made only two of 12 shots for four points, nine below his season average. He led the Yellow Jackets with nine rebounds. Wansley added eight boards in 22 minutes before fouling out.
Guilford entertains 19th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan Sunday (1/11) afternoon while Randolph-Macon visits Emory & Henry Sunday. Emory & Henry upset previously unbeaten Virginia Wesleyan, 69-67, in Emory, VA, today.
