Box Score Greensboro, NC (02/05/03) -- Senior swingman Jay Patrick (Hurt, VA/Gretna) scored a game-high 22 points off the bench and junior guard Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) added 20 points as second-ranked Hampden-Sydney improved to 20-0 with an 84-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win at Guilford Wednesday night.
Hampden-Sydney (20-0, 14-0 ODAC) is ranked second in this week's D3hoops.com Division III poll and first in the Feb.2 NCAA Division III South Region Poll. The Tigers and Washington (MO) are the two remaining unbeaten Division III men's basketball teams.
The Tigers' 19th straight win over Guilford marked the 350th career coaching triumph for Hampden-Sydney's Tony Shaver, a native of nearby High Point, NC. Now in his 17th season with the Tigers, the 1976 UNC Chapel Hill alum boasts a 350-117 career record.
Hampden-Sydney took advantage of 14 Guilford turnovers in the first half and converted them into 19 points and a 47-31 halftime lead. Patrick led all scorers at the break with 12 points on five-of-six field-goal shooting, including two three-pointers. The Tigers shot just over 58 percent from the floor in the opening half and committed only six turnovers.
Patrick's traditional three-point play with 13:58 remaining in the game capped a 10-5 Hampden-Sydney run and gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game, 57-36. The Tigers started missing shots in the second half and Guilford made a few to keep the game interesting. Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) and Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) scored five points apiece during a late 13-3 Quakers' rally that made the score 77-69 with 1:53 left. Guilford pulled no closer, despite not allowing a field goal in the game's final 3:45. Hampden-Sydney converted 10 of 16 free throws in that time.
Hampden-Sydney outrebounded Guilford, 26-15, in the second half, thanks in large part to all of David Willson's (Memphis, TN/MUS) game-high nine boards. The Tigers had 12 of their 17 offensive caroms in the second period, which led to seven of their 14 second-chance points. Monroe added seven rebounds to his 20 points. Junior forward Jason Holman (Amelia, VA/Amelia County) chipped in 11 points and four boards off the bench. Senior center Lane Brooks (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) had six of the Tigers' 15 steals, plus four points and five rebounds.
Williams paced the Quakers with 17 points off the bench, 10 in the second half. He also added a team-high seven rebounds. Martin finished with 11 points and a game-best five assists. Sophomore center Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page), Guilford's leading scorer, finished with nine points in 13 foul-plagued minutes, four below his season average.
Hampden-Sydney plays the third of five straight road games Saturday (2/08) at ODAC rival Washington and Lee at 7:00 pm. The Quakers, who lost to third-ranked Randolph-Macon Monday, 52-50, head to Northern Virginia for a pair of league games at Bridgewater (2/8) and Eastern Mennonite (2/9).
