Box Score Greensboro, NC (02/18/03) -- Sophomore Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and helped Guilford past Emory & Henry, 81-76, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action Tuesday. The Quakers erased a nine-point second-half deficit in both teams' regular-season finale.
Guilford's (12-13, 8-10 ODAC) third triumph in four games clinched the fifth seed for this weekend's ODAC Tournament in Salem, VA. The Quakers had not been seeded higher than sixth in the eight-team field since joining the league in 1992.
Justin Call's (Ronda, NC/East Wilkes) three-pointer with 10:22 left in the game opened a 58-49 Wasps' lead, the largest for either team. Martin answered with his career-high fourth three-pointer and triggered an 11-0 Guilford burst that Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) capped with a layup at the 8:46 mark for a 59-58 Quakers' edge.
Call, who notched a game-high 28 points and 14 rebounds, responded with five straight points as the teams traded baskets. Senior Paul Russo's (Cary, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) trifecta with 5:35 remaining gave Emory & Henry its last lead, 65-64. Junior Jevon Clarke's (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) two free throws 17 seconds later returned the edge to Guilford and started an 11-2 burst that featured three-pointers by Martin and Robert Spence (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh).
Guilford, which entered the game as the ODAC's top free-throw shooting team (.722), let Emory & Henry get within 79-76 with 11 seconds left by making only seven of 20 free throws in the second half. The Quakers made only two of 12 free throws in the last two minutes.
Clarke led Guilford with 17 points, 11 in the second half, and added seven rebounds. Sophomore Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page), who came off the bench so senior center Matt Lewis (Norwell, MA/Cushing Academy) could start in his final home game, posted his team-best third double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 boards. Williams was solid off the bench with eight points, a career-high seven boards, four assists and three steals. His dunk with seven seconds left put the game out of reach.
Call, the ODAC's leading scorer, made nine of 18 field goals, including three three-pointers. He added four assists to his impressive night before a number of fans who made the trip from Ronda, NC, his hometown. Russo knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 14 points and six assists. Rookie Gary Kerns (Summersville, WV/Richwood) added 10 points and 10 boards for the Wasps.
Emory & Henry committed 17 turnovers, which led to 17 Quakers' points. By contrast, Guilford turned the ball over just nine times, its fewest since making seven miscues in a Feb. 7, 1998, home win over Virginia Wesleyan.
The Quakers meet fourth-seeded Roanoke (14-11, 11-7 ODAC) Saturday the ODAC Tournament at 3:00 p.m. in the Salem (VA) Civic Center. Guilford defeated Roanoke, 96-74, Saturday night in Greensboro.
