Guilford Takes ODAC Baseball Series from Hampden-Sydney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hampden-Sydney, VA  — Guilford swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader from Hampden-Sydney Saturday afternoon, taking the first game, 10-6, and the second, 10-3. Guilford is now 21-10 overall and 8-3 in the ODAC while the Tigers are 13-15 and 2-8 in the conference.

Guilford benefited from six-run innings in both games to take the series from the Tigers. In the first contest, the Quakers took advantage of two errors in the fourth inning by Hampden-Sydney to score six runs and take a commanding 7-2 lead. In the second game, Guilford scored six runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to take a 9-2 advantage.

The Quakers were led by right-fielder Zach Whicker (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) in game one, as the senior was three-for-five at the plate with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. The big hit by Whicker came in the six-run fourth as he busted a two-run double off the right field fence to score Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) and Luke Kempton (Greensboro, NC/Page).

Guilford starter Anthony Ramakis (Annandale, VA/Annandale) worked the first five innings of game one, allowing six hits and four runs while walking four and striking out six to earn the victory. Hampden-Sydney starter Todd Meadows (South Boston, VA) worked the first three and two-thirds for the Tigers and was the hard-luck loser, allowing five hits and just two earned-runs, while he was victimized by errors that allowed four unearned runs during his stint on the mound.

Neal Herndon (Dry Fork, VA) had a big game at the plate, going three-for-three with four RBI and a run scored to lead the Tiger offensive attack. Tigers center-fielder Trey Gregory (Richmond, VA) was two-for-two at the leadoff spot, scoring three runs.

In the second game of the afternoon, Guilford starter Joe Dooley (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out 10 for the fourth time this season. Guilford designated hitter R.J. Marks (Browns Summit, NC/Northeast Guilford) was a perfect four-for-four with a double and a two-run homer that capped off the six-run sixth inning for the Quakers.

Hampden-Sydney's Josh Vaughan (Colonial Heights, VA) took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs through five innings of work. The senior right-hander allowed 10 hits, but walked none and struck out two batters.

Dan Ellithorpe (Ashland, VA), Warren Poirier (Hopewell, VA) and Herndon each collected two hits for the Tigers. Herndon's five-for-six performance at the plate, along with five RBI on the day, draw the senior shortstop ever closer to becoming Hampden-Sydney's all-time leader in hits and RBI. With eight games remaining on the Tigers' schedule, Herndon needs just eight hits and six RBI to eclipse the all-time marks.

Guilford hosts Greensboro Monday (04/08) at 3:00 p.m. on McBane Field. The Tigers return to action on Tuesday as they host ODAC-foe Lynchburg at 3:00 p.m. at Yank Bernier Field.
