Guilford Rallies Past Eastern Mennonite, 5-4, in 10 Innings

Box Score

Salem, VA  -- Freshman Josh Miller's (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) two-out single in the 10th inning scored senior Tim Huie (Ovideo, FL/Ovideo) from second base and lifted Guilford past Eastern Mennonite, 5-4, in the third game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament at Memorial Stadium Friday.

The Quakers' (30-11) school record-tying 30th win of the year sends them into Saturday's tourney final for the first time since 1998. Eastern Mennonite (29-12) meets the winner of Friday afternoon's elimination game between Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan Friday night in Friday's second elimination game.

Eastern Mennonite built a 4-1 lead after six innings thanks to a run-scoring single in the first inning by senior catcher Erik Kratz (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock), a solo homer by junior Casey Severs (Waynesboro, VA/Waynesboro) in the second and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Tavis Laws (Winchester, VA/Sherando) in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore southpaw John Lonneman (Petersburg, VA/St. Vincent de Paul) yielded an unearned run in the first and five hits before giving way to junior Ryan Martin (Ephrata, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) in the sixth inning for the Royals.

Guilford junior Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) (2-4, RBI) started the Quakers' comeback off of Martin in the seventh inning with a run-scoring triple to right-center field, his school-record ninth three-base hit of the season. Senior Zach Whicker (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) plated Franklin with an RBI grounder to short and tied the game in the ninth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Whicker finished with three runs batted in.

Huie drew a one-out walk off of Eastern Mennonite closer Chris Flynn (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) (4-2) in the top of the 10th inning and took second on a two-out single to left by sophomore A.J. McCauley (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum). Miller, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the ninth, grounded a 1-2 pitch just under the outstretched glove of Royals' shortstop Matt Lewellen (Grafton, VA/Grafton) into left field to score Huie from second.

Guilford senior Chris Francis (Fairfax Station, VA/Hayfield) pitched two scoreless innings of two-hit relief for his second win of the season in as many appearances. Senior Anthony Ramakis (Annandale, VA/Annandale) yielded four earned runs and fanned six in eight effective innings for the Quakers.

Severs finished with a game-high three hits, including his fourth home run of the season. Kratz and Laws each added two hits for the Royals.
