Guilford Clinches ODAC Tourney Berth with Sweep of Emory & Henry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Greensboro, NC -- Senior Joe Dooley (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) improved to 10-2 with a complete-game two hitter to give host Guilford an 11-0 win and a sweep of Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Emory & Henry at McBane Field. Senior Anthony Ramakis (Annandale, VA/Annandale) tossed a complete-game eight-hitter in the Quakers' 11-3 opening-game win.

Guilford's fifth and sixth straight wins assure the Quakers (24-10, 11-3 ODAC) of their fifth trip to the four-team ODAC Tournament and their third tourney bid in the last five years.

The Wasps fall to 6-19 (4-10 ODAC).

Guilford gave Dooley (pictured) all the support he needed in the first inning on junior R.J. Marks' (Browns Summit, NC/Northeast Guilford) two-out, two-run double in the first inning off of starter Mark Arrington (Barboursville, VA/William Monroe). Dooley faced the minimum 21 batters and fanned six in his ninth complete game of the year, which ranks second in school history. His 10 wins mark the third-highest total in Guilford history and his league-best 93 strikeouts stand fifth all time. The right-hander is Guilford's fifth 10-game winner and the Quakers' first since K.C. Chambers '99 went 10-3 in 1998.

Arrington (1-5) left the game after Marks' double due to an injury. His replacement, junior southpaw Peter Raber (Kingsport, TN/Sullivan South), got the Wasps out of the inning, but departed in the following frame after Guilford senior Tim Huie (Oviedo, FL/Oviedo) banged an RBI-single through middle off of Raber's foot. Junior lefty Jay Rosser (Altavista, VA/Altavista) relieved him and worked into the sixth inning.

The Quakers touched Rosser for four runs over three innings, including back-to-back leadoff homers by juniors Luke Kempton (Greensboro, NC/Page) and Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) in the third. Kempton added a two-run double in the Quakers' six-run sixth. He finished the game 3-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Marks, the reigning ODAC Baseball Player of the Week, also had three hits and three RBI, plus two doubles.

Franklin (pictured) extended his hitting streak to a season-best 13 games with three hits, two RBI, a double and his second homer of the afternoon. He hit for the cycle on the day, including a two-run triple in the fourth inning of the opening game. Franklin's blast marked his league-leading seventh three-base hit of the year and tied the Guilford record for triples in a season set by Tommy Grayson '67 in 1966.

Franklin delivered the big blow in the opening game, a three-run homer to highlight Guilford's five-run third inning. Wasps' starter Broz Wilmoth (Dobson, NC/Surry Central) (3-4) cruised through the first two innings before Quakers' senior Steve Danis (Summerville, SC/Plainfield (CT)) and Huie opened the third inning with back-to-back homers. Franklin followed three batters later with the third Quakers' homer of the frame to give the hosts a 5-0 lead. The margin grew to 11-0, thanks in part to Franklin's two-run triple in the fourth and junior Zach Morgan's (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) two-run single in the fifth.

The opening-game win marked the 300th of Guilford head coach Gene Baker's 15-year coaching career. His overall record stands at 301-452, including 102-96 in five years at Guilford.
