Box Score Fayetteville, NC -- The Methodist College baseball team flexed its offensive muscle by scoring 16 unanswered runs as the Monarchs rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Quakers of Guilford College 16-5 this afternoon in non-conference action at Shelley Field. With the win, MC head coach Tom Austin (696-269-6, 23rd season) moves one win closer to the 700-win plateau and now stands only four games shy of becoming only the sixth NCAA Division-III coach to reach the coaching milestone.
The Quakers used a four-run third inning highlighted by a two-RBI double by Nick Black (JR/Matthews, NC) to stretch their early lead to five.
Methodist used an eight-run sixth inning sparked by back-to-back solo homeruns from Dan Glies (JR/Pittsburgh, PA) and Jimmy Ross (JR/Niceville, FL) to grab a lead they would never relinquish.
The Monarchs, which had half of their hits go for extra bases, were led by Glies' perfect 3-3 performance as the junior was responsible for plating four Methodist runners. Rian Lane (SR/Mechanicsville, VA) and Jeff Beitzel (SR/Stafford, VA) each added multiple-hit afternoons as the duo combined to go 4-7 with four RBI and three runs scored.
MC's David Reece (JR/Jacksonville, NC) came in to pitch five and a third scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season.
The loss ended Guilford's two-game winning streak and dropped the Quakers to 3-4 overall on the young season. Steve Danis (SR/Summerville, SC) led the Quakers with a 3-4 performance from the plate to go along with a run scored and a RBI. Teammate Luke Kempton (JR/Greensboro, NC) also recorded a multiple-hit afternoon with a 2-5 outing that included a run scored.
The Monarchs return to action on Friday, February 22nd when they travel to Atlanta, GA to take part in the prestigious Rawlings Classic. Methodist opens play with a pair of games against nationally-ranked teams as they square off against 27th-ranked Maryville (TN) College at 11:00 before a nightcap with 11th-ranked Emory University at 6:00.
