Greensboro, NC (01/19/02) -- Freshman forward Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both career highs, to lead Guilford's women's basketball team to a 75-46 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Virginia Wesleyan Saturday in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The win capped a Quakers' sweep of Saturday's ODAC basketball twinbill as the Guilford men downed Lynchburg, 86-59, in the opener behind a game-high 19 points by senior guard Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill).
Hill connected on 14 of 16 shots from the floor and made two free throws to record the Quakers' first 30-point game since Arden Miller '01 hit for 37 against Lynchburg February 10, 2000. She had 12 points and nine rebounds by halftime to help Guilford (13-2, 10-1 ODAC) to a 39-23 halftime lead. The Marlins (4-10, 3-8 ODAC) pulled no closer than 14 points in the second half as Guilford cruised to its fifth straight win and 12th victory in its last 13 games. The Quakers have won four straight against Virginia Wesleyan.
Senior guard Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) matched her season high with 11 points for Guilford and sophomore forward Jennie Keichline (Cary, NC/East Chapel Hill) tallied 10 points, all in the opening half. The Quakers forced Virginia Wesleyan into 27 turnovers, which led to 27 Guilford points and a 12-0 edge in fast-break points.
Junior guard Angelique Cavanaugh (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville) led the Marlins with 21 points, nine rebounds and a game-high six steals.
In the men's game, Kindem scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the first half and senior center Aron McMillian (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) had 15 of his 16 points in the opening period as the hosts jumped out to a 42-29 halftime lead. Guilford (10-6, 7-4 ODAC) forced 12 of Lynchburg's 25 turnovers in the first half, which contributed to many points in transition and a 57.6% field-goal percentage in the opening 20 minutes. The Quakers shot 53.8 percent in the second half and never let the Hornets (2-13, 1-8 ODAC) closer than 15 points in the second half. Guilford set season-highs with 21 steals and 55.9 percent field-goal shooting.
Lynchburg freshman Ashby Tarkington (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) led the Hornets with 12 points. Senior forward Jamie Copsey (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) added eight points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Guilford's 10-6 start matches its best since 1988-89 and its 10 wins match the Quakers' win total of last season. The last Guilford team to win 10 games was the 11-14 1994-95 unit.
The Quakers host Roanoke Bible College Monday night (01/21) at 7:00 p.m. This is a change from many published schedules. The January 29 game with Roanoke Bible will be played in Elizabeth City, NC, at 7:00, not at Guilford.
