GUILFORD WOMEN HOLD OFF RANDOLPH-MACON FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/18/02) -- Guilford held off a furious Randolph-Macon rally Friday night to claim an 80-71 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win in Guilford's Alumni Gym.

The Yellow Jackets (6-9, 5-5 ODAC) trailed by 18 points 18:35 left before storming back to within 72-71 on an Allison King (Cary, NC/Cary) basket with 2:46 remaining. Guilford (12-2, 9-1 ODAC) made six of eight free throws during an 8-0 game-ending run in its fourth straight win and 11th victory in 12 games. The win give the Quakers a sweep of the season series with Randolph-Macon for the first time since 1996-97.

Guilford freshman forward Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 3:17 left in the game.

The contest marked the first varsity basketball game played in Alumni Gym since 1980. A back-board shattered in the Ragan-Brown Field House before a Guilford men's junior varsity contest Thursday, which required Guilford to find an alternate site for Friday's game. A new backboard will be delivered and installed prior to the Quakers' men's and women's basketball doubleheader Saturday (01/20).

Guilford, which uses Alumni Gym for practice, found the rims friendly in the opening half and shot 60.6 percent from the floor en route to a 49-33 halftime lead. Hill, who scored 12 points in the first half, made two free throws with 18:35 remaining to give the hosts a 53-35 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets' defense kept Guilford off the board, while King helped them slowly get back into the game. Her second three-pointer of the second half capped a 12-4 Randolph-Macon run that brought the visitors to within 63-59 with 8:12 remaining. Her jumper with 2:46 left finished off a 5-0 spurt and made the score 72-71.

Guilford junior Shannon Underwood (Niantic, CT/East Lyme) answered with two free throws on the Quakers' next possession. After a Yellow Jackets' turnover, sophomore forward Jennie Keichline (Cary, NC/East Chapel Hill) broke a nearly four-minute Guilford field-goal drought with a mid-range jumper to give the hosts a 76-71 edge with 1:52 left. The Quakers made four of six free throws in the final 42 seconds to preserve the victory.

Sophomore forward Sarah Crider (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) paced four Yellow Jackets in double-figure scoring with 17 points and six rebounds. King finished with 14 points, 12 in the second half, and sophomore Emily Crider (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) added 12 points and five boards off the bench. Senior guard Meredith Roberts (Vienna, VA/James Madison) scored nine points and grabbed a game-high nine caroms.

Senior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett) scored 16 points and passed Lori Helton '91 for 10th place on Guilford's career scoring list with 1,030 points. She also had six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Underwood finished with a season-high 14 points off the bench and Keichline added 11 points.

Guilford hosts Virginia Wesleyan Saturday (01/20) at 4:00 p.m. in an ODAC game, while the Yellow Jackets visit league-rival Emory & Henry Saturday (01/20) at 4:00 in the fourth of their seven-game road trip.
