Box Score Salem, VA (02/17/01) -- Third-seeded Randolph-Macon converted 31 Guilford turnovers into 35 points and defeated the sixth-seeded Quakers, 73-56, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game Saturday night in the Salem Civic Center.
The Yellow Jackets (16-9) advance to Sunday's semifinal game against second-seeded Hampden-Sydney, a 65-51 winner over number-seven Eastern Mennonite Saturday. Guilford ends its best men's basketball season since 1995 with a 10-15 record.
The Quakers trimmed a 16-point second-half deficit to five with an 11-0 run fueled by four points apiece from senior guard Jaron Randall (Trenton, NJ/Princeton Day) and rookie forward Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford). Swindell's layup with 8:56 left capped the run and made the score 51-46.
Guilford lost its momentum as Randolph-Macon answered with an 11-0 run of its own to take a 62-46 edge with 5:15 remaining in the game. Freshman guard Ryan Stein (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) scored six of his game-high 14 second-half points during the Yellow Jackets' spurt. After pulling to within five points, Guilford missed 12 straight field goals and committed 10 turnovers before rookie Joe Norman's (Boonville, NC/Starmount) layup with 28 seconds remaining.
"We just probably had our worst game of turnovers," Guilford head coach Butch Estes said. "Their pressure defense got us turning it over." Fifteen of the Quakers' 31 turnovers came in the second half and led to 19 Yellow Jackets points.
Stein finished with a game-high 17 points off the bench for Randolph-Macon. Sophomore guard Jamal Brunt (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) tossed in 12 of his 14 points in the second half and knocked down two three-pointers. ODAC Rookie of the Year Kurt Bergmann (Fallsington, PA/Pennsbury) scored all 12 of his points in the first half for Randolph-Macon.
Swindell paced the Quakers with 13 points off the bench in 11 minutes. "For a freshman, he showed he's got a presence inside that we'll look forward to enjoying next season," Estes said.
Guilford senior Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) scored nine points and grabbed a game-high nine boards in his final college game. A 2001 honorable mention All-ODAC pick, he leaves as the Quakers' leading rebounder in the program's Division III era with 553.
The Quakers 10 wins mark the program's most in a season since the 1994-95 unit went 11-14. Guilford won a school-record nine ODAC games and reached the league tournament for the first time in six years. Estes and Randolph-Macon head coach Mike Rhoades shared the ODAC's Co-Coach of the Year Award.
