Box Score Greensboro, NC (12/02/01) -- Senior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett) scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the second half as Guilford downed visiting Washington and Lee, 62-47, Sunday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action. The Quakers' third straight win marked their consecutive victory over the Generals and gives them a 17-1 edge in the season series.
Both teams posted league wins less than 24 hours before Sunday's 4:00 p.m. start and appeared fatigued at times. Washington and Lee (1-4, 1-2 ODAC), which won 76-71 in double overtime over Randolph-Macon Saturday, shot 28.6 percent from the floor and committed 37 turnovers, 23 in the first half. The Quakers (4-1, 3-0 ODAC) didn't shoot much better (35.2%) and turned the ball over 21 times after notching an 86-42 win at Randolph-Macon Woman's College Saturday.
Guilford opened the game on a 10-2 run and never trailed. The Generals pulled to within five points in the first half, but never drew closer than eight points early in the second half. The Quakers limited Washington and Lee to 10 field goals and enjoyed a 29-0 advantage in bench scoring.
Sophomore forward Jennie Keichline (Cary, NC/East Chapel Hill) scored eight of her 12 points in the first half and helped the hosts to a 23-17 halftime lead. She also made a career-high five steals. Sophomore forward Kate Goodman (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan) added 10 points, three assists and two steals in 17 minutes off the bench. Freshman forward Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) matched career highs for the second straight game with eight points and a team-high eight boards.
Generals' senior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) posted her fifth double-double in as many games with 24 points and 12 rebounds, both game-high totals. She and senior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) entered the contest averaging over 20 points per game on over 50 percent field-goal shooting, but combined for seven-of-24 shooting from the floor Sunday. Babst finished with 10 points, eight boards and two blocks.
Guilford meets crosstown rival Greensboro Tuesday (12/4) at 6:00 in the Greensboro Coliseum in the first game of the annual Guilford-Greensboro doubleheader. The men's game follows at 8:00 p.m. The Generals host Mary Washington Tuesday (12/4) at 7:00 pm.
